Instituted in July of 1934 by von Hindenburg to recognize service in WWI. It ranked beneath bravery awards but above other service and campaign awards.

Die struck, magnetic sheet metal award with a bronze wash. The cross has swords emanating upwards between its arms, indicating a combatant’s award. The cross has a plain reverse with embossed manufacturer’s initials. The cross’s ribbon suspension loop and ring are both intact.
